Monday Mixtape - Horror Games

Apr 23, 2018

Welcome to the first installment of Party of One Monday Mixtapes--a curated collection of some of our favorite episodes from the Party of One archives, assembled around a given theme and released every Monday.

Today’s Mixtape: Horror Games!

Let’s get spooky, y’all.

Horror is a bit of a tough thing to recommend, because it can mean a lot of different things to different people. Get Out, The Exorcist, 1408, Silence of the Lambs, and Nosferatu are all horror films, but they’re so wildly different that you might love one and hate the rest. So the challenge for this mixtape was to find episodes that’d appeal to fans of a wide variety of horror fare. No matter what kind of scares you’re into, there should be an episode here that scratches your itch.

  1. 110 - Monster of the Week with Cole Burkhardt: If you like your horror in the vein of The X-Files, Supernatural, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you’ll love this one. Secret societies, terrors in the sewer, and one hell of a big, bad monster at the end.
  2. 47 - The Bite with Rich Howard: On the other hand, if you prefer your horror of a more human variety, this is one of the most stressful episodes we’ve ever recorded. Sure, there are zombies, in theory, but the nightmare is much simpler and much more painful: two people, in a locked room, both unsure if the other’s been bitten, and both eyeing the revolver sitting between them… (cw: frank discussion of self-harm)
  3. 118 - Stories From The Grave with Vegas Lancaster: Stories From The Grave is a brilliant tabletop tribute to the kinds of pulpy, lurid 50s horror comics you’d find in EC Comics anthologies. And from haunted LARPs to killer moths, Vegas and I did those stories justice.
  4. 95 - Grin With Tasha Robinson: If you like haunted house stories, you’ll love this one, about a condo fire that turns into something much more terrifying as firefighters break down the doors.
  5. 58 - Mage The Awakening with Dan Sos: World of Darkness games tout themselves as urban horror, but rarely do they feel as unnerving as in this episode, in which a young wizard slowly unravels a nightmareish mystery and comes face-to-face with supernatural terror.
  6. 75 - The Hour Between Dog & Wolf with Cole Burkhardt: No zombies, no vampires, no killer LARPs, no evil magic; this episode is pure human horror. The story of a serial killer and a police detective, locked in orbit with one another, each hoping it won’t end in blood, but knowing there’s no way out.

Bonus: One Shot, Episode 175 "Scoundrel In The Deep" - If you want more two-player horror, check out this episode of One-Shot featuring Jeff Stormer--a dark fantasy survival story played with a real book of matches.
